The truth is, I didn’t really understand the importance of self-worth until I hit rock bottom at a music festival.
I wasn’t with my normal group of friends, so I was feeling a bit out of place, and worrying about fitting in.
Anyway, one thing led to another, and I ended up drinking too much.
But instead of just leaving it at that, my mind did what a minds do: it made things even worse by making my drinking too much mean that I’m a bad person.
*Cue shame spiral*
Now, not only was I having a bad time because I overindulged, I was creating all this unnecessary pain and suffering by telling myself I was unworthy.
Every time my boyfriend consoled me, my mind would offer even more shameful thoughts:
I remember sitting on the ground, sobbing with face in my hands in shame, with my boyfriend on my left and one of my closest friends on my right, both reassuring me that I’m not a bad person and that they love me.
But no matter what they said, their kindness and compassion fell on deaf ears. Why?
Because I did not feel worthy of kindness and compassion. So I was unable to accept it even when it was right in front of my face.
That realization hit me like a ton of bricks.
That night, I decided to start investing in my own self-worth. I finally understood that no matter how good life is, you can’t really receive its bounty unless you decide you’re worthy of it.
Since then, I’ve learned a few very important lessons about self-worth, and they completely changed my life. They are simple, but powerful ideas I know will change your life.
